In class, I had the opportunity to work with the wheel of eight characteristics to better understand and develop my strengths for a successful career. This exercise turned out to be incredibly beneficial, offering me a clear perspective on what I should prioritize to achieve my goals and helping me recognize the strengths I already possess.

One of the most eye-opening aspects of the activity was identifying three characteristics I wanted to improve. Initially, it felt daunting because these areas could be perceived as weaknesses, but reframing them as opportunities for growth was deeply motivating. I chose to focus on networking, creativity, and confidence—three traits that I believe will significantly impact my personal and professional development.

Networking: Bridging Opportunities

Networking was my first choice because I realized I could be doing a much better job of reaching out to others. Whether it’s connecting with professionals I admire, seeking advice, or exploring new opportunities, I know this skill is critical to building relationships that open doors. It’s not just about professional gain; it’s about creating meaningful connections that can enrich my journey.

Creativity: Unlocking My Imagination

Creativity has always felt like a bit of a challenge for me. I often find myself stuck in what some might call “writer’s block,” unsure of how to channel my ideas effectively. However, I firmly believe that creativity is a muscle—one that grows stronger with practice and the right mindset. By shifting my perspective, I’m determined to unleash my creative potential and trust in my ability to generate innovative ideas.

Confidence: Believing in Myself

Confidence is perhaps my most personal area for growth. I tend to be overly self-conscious in social situations and often struggle with negative self-talk. This year, I’ve set a goal to embrace confidence, not only in how I present myself to others but in how I view and celebrate my accomplishments. I want to be proud of who I am and the hard work I put into everything I do.

This exercise was more than just a reflection; it was a catalyst for self-discovery. It helped me uncover insights about myself that I hadn’t fully acknowledged before. I love that I can now display the wheel I created as a daily reminder of the traits I want to nurture.

What stood out the most to me is the realization that building a successful career starts with investing in our inner growth. Before setting out to chase opportunities, it’s essential to understand and refine who we are at our core.

I’m genuinely excited for what lies ahead in this class. If this exercise is any indication of what’s to come, I can’t wait to dive into more activities that deepen my self-awareness and help me grow both personally and professionally. Here’s to embracing the process and striving for the best version of ourselves!

Sincerely,

Chloe Miller
