Discovering My Core Values and Path to Happiness

Today in class, I embarked on a reflective journey to identify the five main values that resonate with me and shape my aspirations. Guided by my partner Taylor, I shared my career and life goals as she thoughtfully observed and captured what she perceived to be my core values. Through this exercise, I uncovered the pillars that guide me: work-life balance, optimism, happiness, freedom, and persistence.

As I reflected on these values, I realized how they align with my current life and career ambitions. Among them, happiness stood out as the value I have the most control over today. I rated my current happiness at a 6 out of 10 but aspire to elevate it to a solid 9. This realization was empowering—it showed me that happiness is something I can actively cultivate by shifting my perspective and creating opportunities for joy.

I made the decision to focus on happiness because it is deeply connected to my mindset and choices. By consciously choosing to see the good in my life, I can transform the way I experience each day. I’ve decided that this journey is entirely for me, created by me, and within my control. I can nurture happiness by:

  • Speaking kindly to myself and embracing self-compassion.

  • Seeking the silver lining in every outcome, even when things don’t go as planned.

  • Remaining open to change and embracing life’s unexpected twists.

With these small but meaningful steps, I believe I can guide myself toward greater happiness, which will, in turn, fuel my progress toward my long-term goals.

This exercise was particularly impactful because it simplified my self-improvement journey. By focusing on one value at a time, I felt less overwhelmed and more equipped with actionable strategies to grow. These classroom exercises are something I’ve always wanted to do for myself but often told myself I didn’t have time for. Now, thanks to this opportunity, I feel genuinely motivated to prioritize my goals.

One of my resolutions for the new year is to be more present in my daily life. By working on my happiness, I believe I can achieve this. A more positive outlook will allow me to cherish life’s moments and truly appreciate the here and now. Happiness isn’t just a destination—it’s the foundation that will enable me to become the best version of myself.
