I have always known that I wanted to work in the fashion industry, but I never put a more defined name to it. It was simply a passion I carried, an industry that fascinated me, and a world I dreamed of being a part of. However, when asked in class to list 20 potential jobs or ways of making a living, I initially doubted whether I could come up with that many viable career paths. But, as I allowed my mind to wander and truly consider the possibilities, I was surprised by how many options aligned with my interests and aspirations. Here’s the list I created:
Fashion brand founder
Freelance fashion designer
Yoga studio owner + instructor
Interior designer
Luxury personal stylist
Party planner
Influencer/YouTuber
Boutique owner
Set & costume designer
Digital fashion designer
Fashion & lifestyle blogger
Social media manager for a fashion brand
Freelance branding and graphic designer
Luxury travel and fashion journalist
Business owner (open-ended)
House flipper
Property owner
Fashion illustrator
Marketing manager
Fashion magazine designer
After carefully considering all of these options, I realized that three career paths stood out to me the most: founding my own fashion brand, becoming an influencer/YouTuber, and working as a luxury personal stylist. While these career paths are quite different from one another, they all share a common theme: creativity, personal expression, and a connection to the fashion world that I have always dreamed of being part of.
As a fashion brand founder, my day-to-day life would be dynamic and ever-changing. I imagine a schedule filled with meetings, brainstorming sessions, design planning, and overseeing every aspect of the brand. My physical environment would definitely be in a fashion hub like Los Angeles or New York—both cities that have always caught my eye. I would be immersed in a world of business relationships, collaborating with designers, suppliers, and marketing teams, while also building meaningful friendships with others in the fashion industry. The thought of bringing a unique brand to life excites me, as it would be an opportunity to shape my own creative vision and contribute something new to the industry.
As an influencer/YouTuber, my life would be fast-paced and centered around content creation. I would constantly be brainstorming, filming, editing, and engaging with my audience. I would need to stay productive and consistent to keep my followers engaged, ensuring my content remains relevant and inspiring. While this career path offers location flexibility, California and New York would provide the best networking opportunities, brand partnerships, and creative collaborations. I envision forming strong relationships with brands for sponsorships and working closely with other influencers to create collaborative content. This role would allow me to share my passion for fashion with a wider audience, inspiring others while also building my personal brand.
As a luxury personal stylist, I would spend my days traveling from one client’s home to another, curating outfits that reflect their unique styles and preferences. While much of my work would involve one-on-one client interactions, there would also be plenty of behind-the-scenes preparation, researching trends, and sourcing the perfect pieces. Los Angeles and New York would again be the ideal locations, offering access to high-profile clients who seek luxury styling services. My network would consist of designers, fashion houses, stylists, and high-end clientele, allowing me to immerse myself in the exclusive world of luxury fashion.
Inspired by the activity in class, I started actively researching ways to make those dreams a reality, and I came across two articles that helped me refine my approach to securing a job in the fashion industry. The first, "Why You Absolutely Need a Framework in Your Fashion Job Search" by Glam Observer, emphasized the importance of structure and strategy when pursuing a career in fashion. It made me realize that simply having a dream isn’t enough—I need a clear, step-by-step plan to get there. This article encouraged me to break down my goals, develop a personal brand, and network within the industry to maximize my chances of success.
The second article, “The Power of Perseverance and Resilience in Your Job Search” by Making the Leap, reinforced the idea that breaking into fashion isn’t always easy, but persistence is key. The fashion industry is competitive, and setbacks are inevitable, but this article inspired me to keep pushing forward despite any obstacles. It reminded me that resilience and adaptability are crucial, and that every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow.
Both of these articles have given me a stronger sense of direction. They have motivated me to take actionable steps—whether it’s networking, building my online presence, or gaining hands-on experience—to ensure that I am moving closer to my goals. My dreams of working in the fashion industry no longer feel distant or abstract; they feel tangible and achievable. With a clear vision, determination, and the right resources, I am confident that I can carve out a successful career in fashion and turn my passion into a reality.
I enjoyed this activity in class because often adults ask me what I want to do with my life and I just answer and say that I want to work in fashion. But, when asked to dive deeper into specific ways of living it was fun to see my imagination soar and come across niche positions I can apply to become. More importantly, it gave me the motivation to start researching and planning my future with intention. This exercise reminded me that dreams are only distant until you start taking steps toward them, and now, I feel more determined than ever to pursue a career in fashion with passion and perseverance.
